From defeated enemies will sometimes drop keys, weapons, equipment, and many other things necessary for different passing. If you got wounded during the battle, eat an apple or go to the nearest fire to restore health points. When you have completely cleared the area of the undead and got the key, go to the portal, which will take you to the next level.
